Tottenham and Tullamore, Western NSW
The Twin towns of Tottenham/Tullamore are not just the average 'run of the mill' country towns - they have defied the trend and continued to improve their facilities and services for the benefit of their communities. They are very similar towns, to the extent that they have their own modern Multi Purpose Health Service Centre, share the same Health Service Manager, the same Doctor, the same Ambulance, have both won the Community of the Year Award in recent years for NSW/ACT (under 15,000 population), and they have the same rural industries (sheep, wheat and beef cattle) with similar businesses to service the farming sector.
Although Tottenham is a shade larger in numbers and organisations, Tullamore truly 'punches above its weight' with their well-known popular Annual Irish Festival being just one impressive example of small town innovation with exciting entertainment for all ages. Tottenham has also won the overall NSW ‘Tidy Towns’ (2002 & 2004 in population category).
A small group of Tottenham women (Tottenham Health staff), have for some months invested considerable time and energy into developing the 'Step it Up Totty' program which is under the umbrella of Medicare Local, NSW Health and Western NSW LHD. Although this group has made a commendable start, it is struggling somewhat with regard to resources, including funding. They feel that by investing their energies into and combining with the Healthy Town Challenge project in partnership with our twin town Tullamore, and drawing on the combined resources and expertise of both towns, that far greater results can be achieved than otherwise would have been the case.
The Healthy Town Challenge is all about the twin towns of Tottenham/Tullamore forming a unique-healthy partnership for the purpose of developing and maintaining a PLAN that will significantly improve the overall health and well-being of the respective community residents of ALL ages.We already have the reputation of being 'the can do towns', 'the tidy towns', and now we have a strong desire to be known as‘The Healthy Towns'.
IN SUMMARY: Our VISION is for at least 10% of the Tottenham/Tullomore population to improve their general health and well being (healthy weight and fitness) by at least 7.5% over a 5 year period.
Please contact Richard Clegg at email: firstname.lastname@example.org or mobile 0448 924 411 if you are interested in participating in the challenge or would like to know more about what's happening locally.
